History of Veganuary
Veganuary started in 2014 as a UK-based non-profit organization founded by Jane Land and Matthew Glover, a couple who are passionate about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. The movement encourages people worldwide to try a vegan lifestyle for the month of January. The idea is to get people to adopt a plant-based diet at the start of the year to promote compassion for animals, environmental conservation, and health benefits.
What started as a small campaign has grown into a global phenomenon. In the first year, just over 3,000 people signed up. By 2024, over a million people from almost every country in the world pledged to take part in Veganuary. Celebrities, media, and major food brands have gotten behind the movement, and as a result, hundreds of new vegan products and menu options have been launched.
Veganuary is more than a challenge. Itโs a doorway for many to a sustainable, animal-free lifestyle, often beyond January. Itโs not just about individuals; itโs about businesses and a global culture shift to plant-based.
