History of Veganuary

Veganuary started in 2014 as a UK-based non-profit organization founded by Jane Land and Matthew Glover, a couple who are passionate about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. The movement encourages people worldwide to try a vegan lifestyle for the month of January. The idea is to get people to adopt a plant-based diet at the start of the year to promote compassion for animals, environmental conservation, and health benefits.

What started as a small campaign has grown into a global phenomenon. In the first year, just over 3,000 people signed up. According to the World Animal Foundation, 1.8 million people signed up for Veganuary in January 2024! Celebrities, media, and major food brands have gotten behind the movement, and as a result, hundreds of new vegan products and menu options have been launched.

Veganuary is more than a challenge. Itโ€™s a doorway for many to a sustainable, animal-free lifestyle, often beyond January. Itโ€™s not just about individuals; itโ€™s about businesses and a global culture shift to plant-based.
