The Best Watermelon Salad

I love watermelon and wish it were available all year. Watermelon has always been the refreshing fruit at the summer picnic but has always been the backup singer to the more popular fruit dishes. However, these days watermelon has taken front and center stage, showing off its versatility of being a sweet or savory fruit salad. Spicing up your watermelon has become a thing.

Check out when I tried the mustard and watermelon challenge.

This watermelon salad is a staple and a crowd-pleaser, especially on a hot summer day. The sweet basil paired with the red onion and the tangy lime juice creates the perfect combination with the sweet watermelon.

Watermelon is more of a canvas than you may think. Try a spicy version of this salad by adding cilantro, hot pepper flakes, flavored balsamic vinegar, and green onions for a different twist. After you eat this salad, you and your family will never look at watermelon the same in a good way, of course.

The Best Watermelon Salad has 4 key ingredients:

  1. Watermelon
  2. Red onion
  3. Basil
  4. Lime

Nutritionally, watermelon is rich in citrulline, a compound that converts into the amino acid arginine. Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide—shown to improve blood flow. So, not only is watermelon yummy, it's good for heart and brain health.

So, enjoy this delicious low-fat salad as a standalone snack. Alternatively, have it as a side dish with North African Chickpea Soup or Vegan Mac 'n Cheese.
