What's in this homemade healthy bread crumbs recipe?

  • Sprouted whole-grain bread

We used Food for Life brand Ezekiel 4:9 bread. This brand is typically found in the freezer section of most major grocery stores. It's okay to substitute another sprouted grain bread such as Silver Hills brand.

How to prepare

Six slices of Ezekiel bread will yield one cup of bread crumbs.

Preheat your oven to 200 F (90 C).

Arrange bread on a shallow baking sheet pan (or cookie sheet).

Bake for 1-½ hours. Allow the bread to cool to room temperature. It should be dehydrated and completely crisp.

Use bread crumbs after they've cooled to room temperature, or store them for later use. These bread crumbs keep well in an airtight container (like in a freezer bag) in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, or in the freezer for up to two months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to make bread crumbs without a food processor?

After the bread has been dehydrated, crisped, and cooled, there are three methods for making bread crumbs without a food processor:
1. Use your hands to break the bread into small chunks and place them in a freezer bag. Use a rolling pin to further break down the bread into smaller crumbs.
2. If you have a blender, you can add a small batch to the blender and pulse them into crumbs.
3. Use a box grater to make bread crumbs.

How to dry bread for bread crumbs?

The best way to dry bread for bread crumbs is to set your oven at a low temperature, like 200 F (90C), for about 1.5 hours. Allow the bread to cool to room temperature and further crisp up before processing into bread crumbs.

How much bread crumbs does 1 slice of bread make?

For this recipe, one slice of bread makes about 2.7 tablespoons of bread crumbs.
