What's in this black forest overnight oats recipe

  1. Rolled oats (use gluten-free, if gluten-sensitive)
  2. Cherries, pitted
  3. Chia seeds
  4. Carob or cacao powder
  5. Simple Homemade Date Syrup
  6. Unsweetened plant-based milk

Both frozen or fresh pitted cherries work well.

The chia seeds not only provide a wonderful texture for these chewy oats but also adds healthy omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Use carob powder for a caffeine-free option. Carob tastes similar to chocolate but has a unique flavor.

Any plain, unsweetened plant-based milk will work, such as almond milk, hemp milk, oat milk, or soymilk.

How to prepare

Add the dry ingredients of rolled oats, chia seeds, and carob (or cacao) powder in a medium size mixing bowl. Use a spoon or whisk to combine.

Add in the wet ingredients of Simple Homemade Date Syrup and unsweetened plant-based milk. Stir until well incorporated.

Finally, stir in pitted cherries.

Cover the mixing bowl and let oats sit for two hours or overnight. If using frozen cherries, you can let the oats sit on the countertop at room temperature for two hours. This allows the cherries to thaw while the oats and chia seeds set up. If using fresh or frozen cherries overnight, transfer the mixture to the refrigerator.

When the oat mixture is ready, give it a stir, dish it up, and enjoy!
