Sometimes the simplest foods are the best. What we love about these is they're a healthy and more satisfying replacement for those oily-bagged potato chips. With these smashed potatoes, you're getting all the wonderful fiber, potassium, and other vitamins, but without all the oil and excessive sodium.

What you need to make these oil-free air fryer smashed potatoes

  1. Small (baby) potatoes
  2. Seasonings: fresh herbs, black pepper, or Everything Bagel Seasoning
  3. Optional Hummus for dipping

My grocery store had these beautiful multicolored baby potatoes ("petite melody") about 2-inches in diameter, but you can use any small potato you'd like.

How to prepare

Put small potatoes into a medium pot with water. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat and cook for 15 minutes.

Remove the potatoes from the heat and strain. Set them aside for 5 to 7 minutes or until cool enough to handle.

On a cutting board, center a jar (or cup with a wide bottom) over the potato. Carefully press down to smash the potato. Use a spatula to transfer the smashed potato to the air fryer. Repeat this process until you run out of room in the air fryer basket. Be sure to leave some space in between the potatoes. This helps them to get nice and crispy along the edges.

Cook in the air fryer at 380 F (193 C) for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Store leftovers in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, put into the air fryer at 350 F (177 C) for 5 minutes, or the toaster oven at the same temperature for 10 minutes. These smashed potatoes are also freezer friendly, making them great for meal prep! Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months.

Pro-Tip

The art of the "perfect" smashed potato is in the smashing. I will mix it up by smashing the smallest potatoes completely flat and the larger potatoes mostly flat. What this gives me is a nice mix of entirely crispy potatoes with the small ones I completely flattened out, while the bigger, thicker ones will be soft on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Enjoy these crispy air fryer smashed potatoes immediately, seasoned with fresh herbs, black pepper, or everything bagel seasoning. Salt to taste.

Ways to pair these air fryer smashed potatoes

These crispy potatoes go beautifully as a side for veggie chili, hearty lentil soup, or buddha bowl. They're also wonderful for dipping in hummus.
